Technical Support

Technical support is provided for current registered users of EarthInquiry. Questions to the technical support staff should not be related to academic aspects of the activities, but to functional and technology problems and concerns, such as browser incompatibilities and server errors. Please contact your instructor with content-related questions.

Please email the EarthInquiry staff with any technical support questions. We maintain a list of frequently asked questions below. Please refer to this list to see if your question has already been addressed. Thank you.

8. What are the system requirements for EarthInquiry?

How do I get started?

To create a student user account, go to the Student Login page and fill in ALL FIVE fields. (The web access code is provided at the back of your EarthInquiry booklet.) Click Login. EarthInquiry's database will collect and store your information. (When you come back in the future, you only need to fill in the first two fields to login.) Once inside the site, make sure to affiliate yourself with your course on the Manage Account page.

What if my course is not on the list of registered courses?

If your course is not yet listed on the list of registered courses, you may remain unaffiliated for the time being. Check back periodically for updates. You can affiliate yourself with your course at anytime. Just make sure that you properly affiliate yourself before your instructor starts grading the on-line portion of the activity!

What if I affiliated myself with the wrong course?

If you affiliate yourself with the wrong course, all you need to do is re-affiliate yourself with the right course (on the Manage Account page). Course affiliation is not "set in stone," it can be changed as many times as you find necessary. The important thing is that you properly affiliate yourself before your instructor starts grading!

I forgot to affiliate myself with my course until just now, but I already completed the on-line assessment activity. Will my instructor still have access to my responses?

You can affiliate yourself with your course (on the Manage Account page) at anytime, before or after doing the activity. Your answers to the on-line assessment activity are stored in a database whether you are affiliated with a specific course or not. Once you affiliate yourself with a course, this allows your instructor to see your responses. The most important thing is that you properly affiliate yourself before your instructor starts grading!

When I enter my web access code, I get a message that says that my code may be registered to another user. What should I do?

First, make sure that you have typed in the code properly. Most Recurrence Interval of Floods codes are 16 characters, although some are 17 characters. Note that these codes only contain the numbers 0-9 and the letters a-f. Most Mineral Uses and Consumption, Earthquakes and Plate Boundaries and Long-term Climate Change codes are 5 characters. These codes contain the numbers 0-9 and the letters a-z.

Here is another possibility to consider: Do you have another account on the EarthInquiry website? Did you already register this activity to your other account? If so, use that account to complete the activity.

If you have considered the above options and still are having no success, send an email to the EarthInquiry staff. Please include the web access code you are attempting to authenticate, the name of the activity you are trying to register, and the email address that you are trying to register it to.

I've been here before and registered using a different process. Can I still access my account?

On April 7, 2002, the EarthInquiry staff updated the login procedure to eliminate the need for passwords. You can still access your old account. Simply fill in the first two fields of the Login form (web access code and email address). The system will access your old account information and allow you to login.

I am an instructor. How do I access the Instructor side of the EarthInquiry website?

To create an instructor account, it is necessary to go through a separate registration process. The site is set up this way for security reasons. Go to the Instructor Login page and click the link to "complete the registration process." Fill in the requested information and click submit. Your account information will be reviewed by the EarthInquiry staff. Once verified, usually within one business day, you will be sent an email indicating how to complete the activation of your instructor account.
